In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), from which cupping originates, cupping is practiced in both directions—upwards and downwards. The main purpose of cupping in TCM is to enhance the flow of qi (life energy) and blood throughout the body. Techniques and directions are adjusted based on the treatment purpose, the person's health condition, and specific needs. For optimal lymphatic massage, the cup should be moved towards the lymph nodes. On all areas below the collarbone, the cup should be glided from bottom to top towards the nearest major lymph node. For the face and maximum lymphatic drainage, the cup should be moved from top to bottom towards the lymph node at the collarbone.
